INXS: Michael Hutchence’s sister ‘angry’ over secret brain injury

Michael Hutchence died 25 years ago today: He was found naked and hanged on November 22, 1997 in a room at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Sydney. To this day, the exact circumstances have not been clarified: the coroner attested a suicide, but his girlfriend at the time suspected a failed love game.

An argument blindsided him

Five years before his death, the INXS singer had a serious accident that changed everything: he fell on his head during a scuffle with a taxi driver in Denmark. As a result, he not only lost his sense of smell but also his sense of taste. The brain injury only became known to the general public in 2019 through the documentary “Mystify” and an autopsy report contained therein. Hutchence, on the other hand, did everything he could to keep the restriction secret. So he asked his ex-girlfriend Helena Christensen not to speak about the incident even in front of his family. The Danish top model followed his will.

“So it was wrong that Helena didn’t tell us”

In an interview with the British tabloid “The Sun” The sister of the musician who died early said: “I know that Michael was so happy with Helena, and there was a time when I couldn’t imagine that they were no longer together,” says Tina Hutchence. “But I was angry when I first found out about the attack because I thought it was her duty to tell his family.” There were all these horrible stories about Michael after he died so it was wrong that Helena didn’t tell us about the head injury. She was very close to our parents and could easily have reached out to them.” According to her, her brother’s personality also changed dramatically after the traumatic brain injury.
