International press comments on the Tour de France

Jonas Vingegaard is the second Danish professional cyclist to win the Tour de France after Bjarne Riis. The 25-year-old took the overall win in Paris on Sunday ahead of defending champion Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia and third-placed Welshman Geraint Thomas.

International media commented on this as follows:

Great Britain

“The Guardian”: “Jonas Vingegaard takes Tour de France glory and takes away Pogacar’s aura of invincibility.”

“The Sun”: “Jonas Vingegaard has won the Tour de France – just five years after he worked as a packer in a fish factory. The 25-year-old Dane went to the factory in the morning and jumped on his bike in the afternoon to train. Now he is a Tour winner – and has burned his name into the history books of cycling.”

“The Telegraph”: “While tour winner Jonas Vingegaard deservedly took center stage in his maillot jaune after beating the previously unbeatable Tadej Pogacar in three fantastic weeks of racing, Thomas kept a low profile. He took his two-year-old son Macs with him to the Podium to share the moment with him before heading back to the team bus for a few drinks.”

Spain

‘Marca’: ‘The humble Dane, who was second last year, claims his first triumph after a great performance from Jumbo Visma.’

‘Mundo Deportivo’: “Vingegaard, who was second last year, was quick to show his ambition this year when he wore yellow after stage 11 on the Col du Granon. He said he was keen to win that he already knew what it was like to be second and that he wanted to be on top of the podium in Paris and enjoy the glory. No sooner said than done!”
