International Atomic Energy Agency alarmed after power supply to Zaporizhia nuclear power plant fails again | War Ukraine and Russia

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed concern after the power supply to the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia was lost again this morning after a Russian missile attack. It is already the sixth time that the largest nuclear power station in Europe has had to switch to emergency power supply with diesel generators due to the war. In the meantime, the nuclear power plant has been connected to the power grid again, reports energy company Ukrenergo.

“Every time we roll the dice,” warns IAEA CEO Rafael Grossi. “If we keep doing that, our luck will run out one day. This cannot go on like this. I am amazed at the resignation. What are we doing to prevent this? We are the IAEA. We are supposed to care about nuclear safety.”

According to Grossi, it is high time that a safety zone was established around the nuclear power plant. He will continue to work for this, he assures. The CEO has been negotiating this with Kiev and Moscow for months.

Nuclear power plants depend on a reliable power supply to cool the reactors. With the current twenty emergency generators, the power station can continue to run for two weeks.

Due to a large-scale Russian missile attack this morning on key infrastructure and residential buildings in ten regions of Ukraine, the nuclear power plant was cut off from regular power supply, according to the Ukrainian operator. Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushenko spoke on Facebook of a “barbaric, massive attack” by the Russians.

A spokesman for the Russian operator of the nuclear power plant, Rosenergoatom, confirmed to the Russian state news agency Interfax that the plant had been disconnected from the regular power grid. At the same time, he accused Ukraine of doing so for no apparent reason.

In the meantime, the regular power supply has been restored. This is reported by the Ukrainian energy company Ukrenergo this afternoon on the Telegram messaging service.

The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant was captured by Russian military at the beginning of the war and is still under Russian control. Russia and Ukraine always blame each other for problems with the power supply.
