After a month -long result crisis, Germany’s ski jumper celebrated success at the World Cup in Trondheim. But there were discussions about a DSV eagle.
Karl Geiger was just 3.7 points for World Cup bronze on Sunday. After two strong jumps, the DSV eagle landed fourth in Trondheim. “We should never write off Germans,” said Geiger, who has also been fighting for months with shape weakness. “If you get a thresher from all sides, it’s not easy. Today is an important day, we have been rewarded,” said the 32-year-old.
But at least a little threshing also followed in the hours after jumping. Because abroad, the sudden success of the DSV eagle, Andreas Wellinger was even second, was a bit critical.
The Polish medium “Sport.pl” spoke of a “monstrous suit” and a “complete scandal”. The Eurosport commentators Igor Błachut and Michał Korościel already made sarcastic comments during the show. “A man in the cloak. We see that Karl Geiger did not change his suit. This is actually a sleeping bag,” she blasphemed.
Ski jumping legend Adam Małysz was also skeptical. The newspaper “Przeglad Sportowy” said: “Either we still have a loophole in the rules and someone knows how to avoid it, or I don’t know what’s going on here. Something is wrong here. I mean, that’s obvious.” There was also a critical voice from Norway. Ex-jumper Andreas Stjerne told the newspaper “Dagbladet”: “I agree that it looks suspicious.”
Poland’s head coach Thomas Thurnbichler was at least an indication that “Sport.pl” interpreted, among other things, towards Geiger: “You can see that some jumpers have a long suit.”
The accused himself rejected the allegations. “I had a control and I passed it,” said Geiger. The DSV eagle looked ahead, because the next jump is already pending on Wednesday. “Of course we can now appear with a wide cross,” he said. “Nobody can take the medal away – there is another one on the big one.”
