With the latest triumph, Chivu’s team moves to +2 on Milan, still in the hunt for their second star. A sprint that has lasted since 1908
Madonna, how many championships! Milan continues the collection, reaching 40 titles. Inter are Italian champions for the 21st time, in the special derby they lead Milan, at 19 points. The Nerazzurri, under the guidance of Chivu, extend their lead in the city, in a sprint that has lasted since 1908, that is, since the foundation of the now defending club. It is a long head-to-head, often characterized by tears, golden cycles, in alternating phases throughout the twentieth century and in more recent years. In the Milan Grand Prix Inter shows off two stars. Milan had to work hard to win the first: they have one more reason to try to attack the tricolor again. The Nerazzurri have won three of the last six scudetti and managed to overtake the Rossoneri in 2021 with Conte and then extended the gap in 2024 with Inzaghi and now with Chivu.

The head-to-head began with Milan, founded by Kilpin in 1899, capable of winning three championships in 1901, 1906 and 1907. Having just been created, Inter started very well and became champions in 1910. Be careful, the closing years of the decades brought luck to the Nerazzurri, who did the encore in 1920, the hat-trick in 1930 with Meazza and reached five in 1940, with the success worth the first advantage over the city rivals. The Devil broke a 44-year abstinence in 1951, when they spread with the Swedish trio Gren-Nordahl-Liedholm.

Inter did not stand idly by and in 1953 and 1954, driven by goals from Nyers, Skoglund and Lorenzi, remained in command in the title table 7-4. The Rossoneri produced a prodigious sprint and from 1955 to 1962 enriched the board with four tricolours. It is a Milan that embodies the recovery of Italy, which is experiencing the economic miracle in full: the Northern metropolis excels in all fields, in football it holds its own against the Agnelli family’s Juventus. Dynasties such as the Morattis and the Rizzolis came to the fore, bringing their respective clubs to the forefront. It is no coincidence that the two Milanese clubs were the first Italians to establish themselves in Europe, in the Champions Cup.

The continental titles bear the signature of great coaches such as Rocco and Herrera. Strong abroad, powerful also in Italy. Inter overtook the Rossoneri and in 1966 they boasted their first star. Milan resisted, losing a title recovered by Inter in 1971, only in 1979 did they break the spell and achieve their tenth championship with Nils Liedholm on the bench, with Gianni Rivera’s swansong. The final blow in 1980, another decade…, earned Inter a 12-10. Then Silvio Berlusconi enters the scene, bringing our football back to a supranational dimension. In 1988 his Milan, with the prophet Sacchi, was again tricolor, in the following two years it was on the top of Europe and the world. Pellegrini’s Inter responded in 1989 with the record-breaking scudetto, then the Devil took over: from 1991 to 2003 they dominated Serie A on six occasions: four with Capello at the helm, then with Zaccheroni and Ancelotti.

After the Calciopoli storm, Inter regained momentum and achieved a string of five championships, three with Mancini and two with Mourinho: they beat Milan 18-17. These were the happiest seasons of Massimo Moratti’s management, the pinnacle being the Treble in 2010. The following year the Rossoneri gave Berlusconi the last tricolor with Allegri. From 2011 to 2021, Milan suffered the longest drought of tricolors in the post-war period, dominated by the excessive power of Juventus. A former Juventus player, Conte, brings the Scudetto back to Inter, the Devil draws the score with Pioli, 19-19, in 2022, then there is the last Inter escape, with Inzaghi and Chivu. Now the owners of the clubs are foreigners, it’s up to them to commit to the sprint. The race is tough, but exciting: let’s prepare for other exciting episodes, always under the Madonnina.
