Inter, from Bettella to Pinamonti: capital gains in the sights of Finance

Among the suspicious transfers of the two-year period 2017-19 also Vanehusden, Carraro and Valietti. The difficulty of establishing a fair value for athletes

From Bettella to Pina

It should be emphasized that in those first seasons of the Suning management the problem was certainly not the lack of liquidity, but the limits imposed by Financial Fairplay. To return to the limits imposed by Uefa, Inter made micro sales of young people from the nursery to reach the fateful sum necessary to participate in the Cups. In the 2017-18 budget – in addition to those of the more famous Santon and Radu, Handanovic’s current deputy – the sales to Atalanta for 12 million of two youngsters (Bettella and Carraro) stand out, which yielded almost 11 and a half million capital gains. On the other hand, it is out of place that, in the same year, the sale of Zaniolo to Rome yielded only 2.643 million. The total capital gains for that season, as per the budget, amounted to 49.704 million. In 2018-19, on the other hand, the +40.141 is mainly linked to the very heavy sales of Vanheusden (11.7 million, of which almost 10 of capital gains) to Standard Liegi and of Pinamonti to Genoa for 19.5 million. It should be noted that both the Belgian defender (now on loan to Grifone) and the attacker (in Empoli) were then bought back by Inter.

The node of value

Returning to the investigation, after the one that concerned Juventus, the hypothesis – still to be demonstrated – on which the investigators work is that the value of the multi-year rights on the sports performances of the players sold has been overestimated compared to the price at which they are players had been purchased, with the consequence precisely of increasing the revenue item and, on the other hand, reducing that of losses. As stated in the order of presentation of documents notified by the Guardia di Finanza to Inter and the National Professional League, to which the clubs deposit the players’ contracts, in this way an operation would have been carried out that altered the financial statements by giving a representation better than the conditions of the company in order to “respect the parameters of financial fair play” required by UEFA.

One criterion is missing

All this, however, will have to pass the evaluation of the prosecutor Polizzi and the adjunct Romanelli who will have to ascertain whether crimes have been committed and possibly by whom. In fact, in the Prosecutor’s Office, there is maximum caution on a complex subject in which there is no scientific criterion, so to speak, to establish how much a player is worth, because this value is linked to objective elements, but also to other subjective ones. Among the computer and paper documentation that has been requested and already obtained – to note the very collaborative attitude of Inter and the Lega – in addition to the financial statements and contracts, there are also bank transactions to perfect the steps and everything related to negotiations, including those with individual players’ agents.
