Inter, Arnautovic and the automatic redemption obligation: when it is triggered

The Austrian striker has scored only one goal in 15 league games so far and last Sunday he missed a goal against Juve: a draw against Roma is enough, however, the Nerazzurri will pay 8 million plus bonuses to Bologna

Inter-Juventus, which ended 1-0 for the Nerazzurri, could have ended with a bigger result for the home team. Wojciech Szczesny dressed as a superhero in several actions on Sunday evening and at the same time Simone Inzaghi’s team was guilty of inaccuracy in front of goal, wasting some clear scoring opportunities. One of these bears the signature of Marko Arnautovic, who in the 87th minute slammed into the highly inspired Juventus goalkeeper – it’s true – but who undoubtedly could and should have done better just a few meters from the goal. The Austrian international could have been luckier, of course, but the seasonal data are merciless: one goal in 392 minutes (15 appearances) in the league, two in total in 716 minutes overall, still without goals in 2024.

we need more

Arnautovic’s unfortunate season is one of the small flaws in this sumptuous 2023-24 for the Nerazzurri and certainly all the parties involved expected better from the center forward who was long pursued in the summer. Inter have blocked Mehdi Taremi for June and the Austrian now has four months to bring the rating of his first season for Inter above the passing mark. Also to shape his future because, if there isn’t much space right now (392 minutes in 15 appearances in Serie A are an average of 26 minutes per match), in 2024-2025 it could be reduced even more. Or, there is the possibility that the club considers a sale.

how does it work

Yes, there is talk of a transfer even if Arnautovic is currently still officially on loan from Bologna. In reality, however, when the rossoblù finalized the agreement with Inter they did so with a formula that has often been resorted to in recent years for budgetary reasons: loan with conditional redemption obligation, as happened for Kristjan Asllani from Empoli just 12 months earlier. In the case of the Austrian, the aforementioned condition is, quoting verbatim the consolidated financial statements as of 30 June 2023, the “first point obtained after the date of 5 February 2024”: therefore the victory against Juventus on Sunday 4th does not count, but we look at the upcoming commitments. So, just as Marko continues to struggle, Inter is preparing to fork out the 8 million euros plus 2 million in bonuses provided for in the agreement between the clubs. Just don’t lose against Roma on Saturday or possibly against Salernitana the following Friday for the center forward’s card to end up definitively in Viale della Liberazione. And, paradoxically, we end up talking about a transfer even before the player is officially purchased.
