Commissioner Montalbano, it's time to say goodbye: for Luca Zingaretti

Inspector Montalbanothe plot of the episode

The Catalanotti method It opens immediately with a notable difference. It is not the faithful Catarella (Angelo Russo) who warns Salvo Montalbano (Luca Zingaretti) of a new crime, but Mimì Augello (Cesare Bocci). It is he who breaks into the commissioner’s house in the middle of the night to warn him that he has found a body. The context in which everything happened is curious: during one of his love encounters. The wolf loses its fur, but not its vice.

A few moments later, Vigata – the fictional town in which the series is set – becomes the scene of a second murder. And speaking of theatre, the victim is a theater director, Carmelo Catalanotti (Carlo Cartier). During the investigation, it emerges that the man had developed a sui generis acting method, almost to the limit of legality. Its actors were called to act working on the most hidden secretsmore intimate and hidden, sometimes unsuspected.

The lesson often led to a psychoanalytic session in which Catalanotti was able to delve into the deepest depths and also painful for the actor. A method that is too harsh and disruptive, which probably led to his death. Nothing is clear in this case. Reality and fiction, truth and drama are constantly confused and can be misleading.

The meeting between Montalbano and Antonia Nicoletti

As always, Inspector Montalbano arrives at the solution, but through an unusual and rather tortuous path. Note that Catalanotti was also a loan shark. Who killed him? Someone harassed by interests or one of the actors thirsty for revenge? The investigations into the murder are convicts because Salvo meets Antonia Nicoletti (Greta Scarano)a young woman in charge of forensics, with whom she begins a professional collaboration.

The distance, however, does not last long, because their meeting has a disruptive effect on Salvo. She unexpectedly experiences emotions that she had forgotten and soon he falls madly in love with her. A real twist that overturns expectations. For over twenty years, in fact, Montalbano has experienced a long – and exhausting – back and forth with Livia, but now he seems ready to say goodbye to her.

In addition to the actors already mentioned, Marina Rocco is part of the cast (Eleonora), Monica Dugo (Anita Pastore), Aglaia Mora (Dr. Barresi), Giampiero Ciccio (Rosary), Gaetano Aronica (Ernesto Lopez), Maurizio Bologna (Antonio Scimè), Caterina Gurrieri (Genoveffa Recchia) and Santi Cosoli. (Michael Tedesco). To these is added Antonia Truppo (Maria Del Castello), recently seen in the series Free bodybroadcast on Rai 2.

Luca Zingaretti: «I miss Andrea Camilleri»

Close to the episode’s release in 2021, Luca Zingaretti indulged in a brief memory of Andrea Camilleriwho passed away in 2019. “I miss his voice,” he declared to Radiocorriere TV. «He was one of the few intellectual men who constituted a reference figure. He was one of the few authoritative voices on our scene »he has declared.

«Every now and then he made us hear this voice and it enlightened us. She made us think. Today, unfortunately, this voice has died out and I don’t think it’s just me that is missing, but precisely this country.” Zingaretti’s path crossed with that of the Sicilian writer at the end of the 90swhen he was chosen to play Inspector Montalbano.

A partnership that lasted over twenty years, a harbinger of extraordinary success which transformed the series into a real cult and Camilleri’s novels into real bestsellers, with over ten million copies worldwide.
