Injury keeps Schalke defender Van den Berg sidelined for a long time

Defender Sepp van den Berg will not play for Schalke 04 until the winter break. The German club reports that the 20-year-old Dutchman has suffered a serious ankle injury. That happened on Sunday in the competition match with Augsburg, which was lost by Schalke 3-2.

Van den Berg had to leave in the 53rd minute. Initially, there was fear of an ankle fracture, but the diagnosis on Monday showed that there were damaged tires. The club does not say whether surgery is necessary.

Van den Berg’s teammate Rodrigo Zalazar has also been out for a longer period of time. He broke a metatarsal bone in the duel with Augsburg.

‘Bad news’

“This is really bad news,” said technical director Rouven Schröder. “We will do everything we can to get both back on the field as soon as possible.”

Former PEC Zwolle player Van den Berg is rented by Schalke from FC Liverpool.
