Initial claims for US unemployment benefits increased slightly

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)–The number of initial claims for US unemployment insurance benefits increased slightly in the week ended December 2nd. Compared to the previous week, the number of applications rose by 1,000 to 220,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis, as the US Department of Labor announced in Washington. Economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast an increase to 222,000.

For the previous week, the value was revised upwards to 219,000 from the original 218,000. The four-week moving average increased by 500 from the previous week to 220,750.

In the week ended November 25, 1.861 million people received unemployment benefits. This was a decrease of 64,000 from the previous week.
