Indoor EM in Hamburg: German hockey men fear for the final

Status: 12/10/2022 1:07 p.m

The German men’s hockey team suffered a bitter 6:7 (2:3) defeat against Vice European Champion Austria in the penultimate round of the European Championships in Hamburg. The German hockey women, on the other hand, are aiming for the European championship title in the afternoon.

The DHB selection got off to a good start against Austria. Paul Dösch gave the German team an early lead against the European Vice-Champions. In a balanced first round, the guests were able to equalize after a penalty corner to make it 1:1 through Fabian Unterkircher.

Open exchange of blows

From here the spectators in the Hamburger Halle saw a wild game. First Austria gained a two-goal lead through Michael Körper and Moritz Frey, shortly before the break Henrik Mertgens scored the goal to make it 2:3 at half-time. In the third period, Germany even took a 5-3 lead through goals from Philipp Schmid and a double from Henrik Martens.

Two goals ahead wasted

In the last quarter, however, the Austrians were able to shift up a gear and turn the game around again with two goals from Körper and Unterkircher. Niklas Bruns managed to equalize again shortly before the end. In a spectacular game, however, took the 6:7 final point.

“We’ve brought this on ourselves and now we have to win at a high level against the Czech Republic. But we’re sticking with the fact that we played a very, very good game.”
— Paul Dösch, Captain
