A possible German bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics could face competition from Indonesia – from a city that doesn’t even exist yet.

According to the industry portal “insidethegames”, President Joko Widodo confirmed that the South Asian island state wants to apply for the games with Nusantara.

Nusantara is a planned city currently under construction on the island of Borneo, which is scheduled to open in 2024 and will replace the mega-metropolis Jakarta as the capital of the country with 274 million inhabitants.

Indonesia had already tried to host the 2032 Summer Games with Jakarta, which ultimately went to Brisbane.

As the government around Widodo announced, numerous sports facilities are to be built as part of an application, which are intended to give the city of Nusantara an infrastructural boost.
