Incumbent Serbian President Claims Election Victory

Incumbent Serbian president claims victory in elections

Serbia’s incumbent president, Aleksandar Vucic, claims to have won a large victory in his country’s presidential elections. The victory would pave the way for another term as leader of his country. Vucic has been president of Serbia since 2017 and was prime minister of the country for three years between 2014 and 2017.

The president said in a televised address on Sunday evening that he received more than two million votes in the first round of the presidential election. As a result, according to his own words, he ends up with about 60 percent of the vote, which would make a second round unnecessary. The claim is confirmed by the independent organization Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CeSID). On the basis of a preliminary count, he states that Vucic would have won 59 percent of the vote.

However, the official election results will not be announced until Monday. The people of Serbia not only went to the polls on Sunday to elect a new president, but also cast their votes for parliament. Opinion polls ahead of the polls predicted that President Vucic’s centre-right party will also retain its majority in parliament.
