The Noorderzijlvest Water Board can start in September by increasing the water storage in the Onlanden. The province of Drenthe has approved the plans for this.
With the expansion, the Northern Netherlands must be better prepared for climate change. In extreme weather conditions, more water can be collected temporarily.
Now a maximum of 7.5 million cubic meters of water can be collected. After the expansion, that is 12.7 million cubic meters. Among other things, two new weirs are being laid, dikes are raised and locks are being renewed. A number of roads and paths will also be higher. Nature is taken into account as much as possible during the expansion.
The work must be ready in 2027.
