In the future there will probably be no more men’s downhill runs in Garmisch

A severe setback for German skiing is looming: According to a media report, the FIS is removing Garmisch from the downhill season calendar. The race should therefore take place in Asia.

In the Alpine World Cup winter 2022/23 there will be no men’s downhill run on the legendary Kandahar from Garmisch. The Bavarian Radio reported on Monday about corresponding plans of the International Ski Federation FIS. Accordingly, the racing calendar provides “only two women’s races on the Kandahar and a men’s slalom on the Gudiberg” in Partenkirchen.

DSV is “very upset”

Those responsible at the German Ski Association (DSV) and in Garmisch-Partenkirchen were said to be “very upset”. He was “really shocked,” said Florian Fischer, board member of the Garmisch Ski Club, the BR.

FIS President Johan Eliasch wants to give the calendar a more international touch and award races to China, for example. Along with the Lauberhorn descent in Wengen and the Streif in Kitzbühel, the Kandahar is one of the most famous and dangerous slopes.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is applying alongside Crans-Montana/Switzerland, Narvik/Norway and Soldeu/Andorra to host the 2027 World Ski Championships. The decision will be made at the end of May.
