imperial flag? The new jersey from Holstein Kiel has been a fuss

The new second division season starts in less than four weeks. Again and again, clubs have mishaps when presenting the new jerseys – this time Holstein Kiel is causing a stir.

Second division club Holstein Kiel presented their jersey for the coming 2022/2023 season on Monday evening. The club made a blunder. In the area of the upper body, the jersey is designed in a very dark blue, it is also white and red. Some fans on Twitter thought the blue was black – and accused the people of Kiel of having printed the black, white and red Reich flag on their jersey.

In some Twitter comments, there were critical voices, some of which even called for a new design of the jersey. For example, one user wrote under the post from Holstein Kiel: “I don’t check. Doesn’t anyone look over it again and say: ‘We should think again about whether we really want to print a Reich flag on our jersey?'”.

Holstein distances himself from allegations

The second division team responded to the comments with a clarification: “Dear Holstein fans, thank you very much for your feedback on our new shirt. Tastes are always different. We took note not only of the positive but also of the critical voices.”

The club then responded to the fans’ allegations: “At this point we would like to make it clear that we distance ourselves from any form of racism or right-wing ideas. The colors of our jerseys are blue, white and red: the colors of Schleswig-Holstein. This is also clearly visible in the original.”
