“Imperial Commemoration” and the list of speakers: Prominent guests at Beckenbauer’s memorial service

As of: January 18, 2024 12:21 p.m

Many prominent guests come to the memorial service in honor of Franz Beckenbauer in Munich. The rumors surrounding the list of speakers are not quite as glorious.

Rarely have so many world champions from different eras been in the Allianz Arena: Günter Netzer and Wolfgang Overath (1974), Lothar Matthäus and Rudi Völler (1990), Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger (2014), plus the “Summer Fairy Tale Princes” Michael Ballack and Miroslav Klose – to name just a few. They have all personally experienced the “Emperor” who now needs to say goodbye.

The football world bows

It goes without saying that, as soccer record champions Bayern Munich announce, both of his current professional teams will also take part in the memorial service, as will numerous former teammates, friends and colleagues of the “Emperor”. The Spanish top clubs Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are also represented by delegations.

Hans-Joachim Watzke (Borussia Dortmund) and Oliver Mintzlaff (RB Leipzig) have been announced from the Bundesliga, as well as several coaches such as Otto Rehhagel, Hansi Flick and national coach Julian Nagelsmann. And some other athletes, namely Christian Neureuther and Boris Becker, also want to be there in Munich – as do tens of thousands of fans.

Steinmeier and Söder speak – Scholz watches

From the political side, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Prime Minister Markus Söder had already announced their participation. As the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reports, in addition to Bayern President Herbert Hainer, honorary president Uli Hoeneß and Söder, Steinmeier will also give a speech – but not Scholz, who was said to be very worried about further whistles. Most recently, the Chancellor was greeted with a whistle concert at an appearance at the European Handball Championship.

However, the Chancellery emphasized that Scholz was never scheduled to give a speech and that he would take part as a guest. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was heard saying that they didn’t want to talk too much so as not to dilute the topic.
