BVB has a new coach – at least in the short term. Mike Tullberg succeeds the dismissed Nuri Şahin. At his first press conference, he didn’t mince his words.
Four defeats in a row were too many: Nuri Şahin was fired after Borussia Dortmund’s 1-2 defeat at FC Bologna on Wednesday. His successor is Mike Tullberg. The Dane is supposed to look after BVB on an interim basis. At least on Saturday in the game against Werder Bremen (from 3:30 p.m. in the t-online live ticker) he will sit on the bench.
The 39-year-old explained how Tullberg wants to achieve a sporting turnaround on Friday afternoon at his first press conference in Dortmund. My approach is to encourage the boys. I didn’t address what happened before. I received a clear task from Lars (Ricken, the BVB sports director’s editor’s note),” said the Dane, who has looked after BVB’s U19s for years.
Tullberg wants to win the fans back with an offensive style of play after tough weeks with many failures. “81,000 against 11 – that has to be the benchmark,” said the interim coach.
When asked whether there were any thoughts or agreements about further appearances, Tullberg replied: “No, not at all. My clear task is to look after the team until Saturday. That’s what I’m dealing with.” BVB is currently looking for a permanent successor to Şahin.
10:52 am – That was it from Dortmund. Thank you for your interest.
10:49 am – The new BVB interim coach left a very interesting impression. He clearly takes himself back and puts the team’s success in the foreground. He also expressed an interesting attitude towards his job: “Football is the most important thing that is not important,” said Tullberg as his motto.
10:46 a.m – After a good quarter of an hour, Mike Tullberg’s first press conference as BVB coach is already over.
10:44 am – … – on the contrary: “I can completely enjoy it. Pressure is something different for me,” says the 39-year-old.
10:43 am – Regarding his first game as a responsible coach in front of over 80,000 spectators in the Dortmund stadium, Tullberg is relaxed. He doesn’t feel any pressure…
10:40 am – … the Dane: “My clear task is to look after the team until Saturday.”
10:39 am – First of all, Tullberg is focusing on the game on Saturday. There is no plan beyond that. This says…
10:35 am – Regarding further preparation for Saturday’s game, Tullberg said: “I’ve had a lot of conversations and I have a good feeling with the boys.” They “have not forgotten how to play football”.
10:33 am – And what is the difference between his work in youth and the professionals: “I can’t pretend. I am who I am and I’m not there to realize myself. I’m there to help the boys help.”
10:31 am – And then the question round begins. The first is directed at Tullberg’s plan for Saturday’s game against Werder Bremen. The Dane says: “My clear approach is to get energy into the team.”
10:30 a.m – BVB press spokesman Sven Westerschulze welcomes the journalists present.
10:30 a.m – The PK is running.
