Britney Spears has been living in isolation since her guardianship ended. Now she’s talking about her trauma.

Britney Spears is active on social media again. In a recent Instagram post, the 44-year-old describes a tense relationship with her family and speaks openly about fear. “I’m lucky to be alive at all, considering how my family used to treat me,” the singer writes. Today she fears contact with them.

The words mark a contrast to the content that Spears has predominantly shared on social media in recent years. Since the end of her guardianship, dance videos and private snapshots have dominated there.

Guardianship and its consequences

The topic of family has long been a burden for Britney Spears. After a mental breakdown in 2008, her father Jamie Spears was appointed as guardian. Over a period of 13 years, the singer had little control over personal or financial decisions. The guardianship was only lifted in 2021 after a public legal dispute.

Looking back, Spears describes this time as traumatic. In her current post, she addresses people with similar experiences: families who were promised help but were isolated instead. “You can forgive,” says Spears, “but you never forget.”

No processing, no contact

In further posts, Britney Spears makes it clear that, in her opinion, no responsibility has been taken to date. “They will never answer for what they have done,” one of their statements said. The distance from her family was also recently evident around the holidays: Spears apparently spent Christmas without family contact.

On December 28th, she published a sarcastically worded post in which she sent “belated Christmas greetings” to her family – combined with clear criticism and references to the trauma she had suffered.

Withdrawal from the public

Britney Spears is currently living a largely withdrawn life. She has deactivated the comment function on Instagram. According to media reports, she is said to be living in isolation; In September, anonymous sources expressed concern about her condition to the Daily Mail.

After divorcing her husband Sam Asghari in May 2024, Spears said she sought support from her pets. These should give it more structure.
