NH reporter Edward Dekker stood near Wijk aan Zee along the side of the route of the Egmond beach race. What struck him was how thickly dressed spectators were, and the number of red-glowing cheeks that withstood the northeast wind.

Although the recreational players really had difficulty with the icy wind and low temperatures, the cold apparently did little for a number of top athletes.

‘Nothing’s going on’

Nina Kessler won the final sprint and crossed the finish line fully. Although she had expected ‘epic’ weather, she found it was not too bad during the race.

“I was thinking along the way: the conditions are actually great. It’s not too bad. The sun is shining, there’s nothing wrong,” she told NH with a laugh.

Yet, just after the race, while she was taking a breather, she noticed that the weak, winter sun was not the best. “I think that will come in just a few minutes.”

In this compilation you can see how the winter weather held the beach race in Egmond in its grip.
