The tremors that have been occurring in Iceland for a few days portend an imminent eruption, and of great proportions, as experts agree. For weeks now, seismographs have been detecting earthquakes on the Reyjanes peninsula, in the southwest of the country, caused by unusually active underground magma currents.
At the moment, and with the state of emergency decreed by the island government, andThe fishing town of Grindavik has been evacuated, which is near the Blue Lagoon, a tourist enclave well known for its thermal facilities. The 3,400 inhabitants of this town have had to leave their homes due to the danger that they could be affected.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office has indicated that The magma stream would be about 10 kilometers long and would run about 5 kilometers deep.
As time passes, the chances of a rash increase. “I don’t think it will be long before an eruption occurs, maybe hours or a few days”, said volcanologist Thorvaldur Thordarson in statements to a radio station.
The volcanoes that exist in this area have remained inactive until now, but in 2021 they resumed their activity, with three major eruptions, which however have not been explosive. But it is not ruled out that what may occur now is, which would have serious consequences for air traffic.
Something similar already happened in 2010 with the famous eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, when the event affected air traffic in Europe for weeks.
