German ice hockey superstar Leon Draisaitl suffered another bitter defeat with the Edmonton Oilers.
The team from Canada lost 1-0 to the New York Islanders after conceding a goal in the final third. It was the third narrow defeat in the last four games. Draisaitl’s team had previously lost 3-4 after extra time twice.
Both teams kept the game open until the last half without a goal, then the Oilers were caught ice cold: Draisaitl, of all people, had to leave the ice for two minutes because of tripping, while Anthony Duclair (54th) scored the only goal of the evening. The Oilers remain fifth in the Western Conference with 54 points after 48 games.
Coach Marco Sturm and the Boston Bruins also prevailed against a German compatriot in the second duel in a row. Two days after the win against Moritz Seider and the Detroit Red Wings, Sturm’s protégés also beat the Seattle Kraken, where goalie Philipp Grubauer was only on the bench this time, 4-2. Boston extended its own winning streak to five and is heading toward the playoffs in Sturm’s first season.
John-Jason Peterka also celebrated an important victory with Utah Mammoth. The German attacker’s team won 2-1 against the top team, the Dallas Stars, with Peterka remaining without a scorer in their fifth win from the last six games. This also applies to Nico Sturm, who suffered his third defeat in a row with the Minnesota Wild. Sturm’s team lost 6-2 against the Winnipeg Jets, but as third in the West the play-offs do not seem to be in danger.
