IAEA: “Power supply to Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant better assured” | Abroad

Zaporizhzhya is the largest nuclear power station in Europe with six reactors. Due to the war situation in the south of Ukraine, the last active reactor is currently also switched off. Kiev and Moscow have signaled that they are open to establishing a safety zone around the energy company’s premises, according to IAEA director Rafael Grossi.

“I’ve seen signs that Ukraine and Russia are showing interest,” IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said at a news conference in Vienna. The discussions are currently mainly about the perimeter of this zone and the work of the IAEA inspectors on site. “What I see is that both sides are working with us and asking questions, a lot of questions,” Grossi said.

Grossi acknowledged that there would be no demilitarized zone. “We have to keep things simple. Ukraine and Russia must agree to stop bombing the plant. A commitment is needed that no military action will target the plant or its environs.”

The site has been bombed repeatedly in recent weeks. For this, Kiev and Moscow point an accusing finger at each other.
