From “Blue Velvet” to romance

The duo met while casting for Lynch’s 1986 film “Blue Velvet.” Lynch allegedly approached the Italian-born woman at the time and said, “Hey, you know, you could be Ingrid Bergman’s daughter,” without knowing that she was actually the Swedish actress’ daughter. Finally, the role of Dorothy Vallens in “Blue Velvet” was cast with Rossellini. The film not only provided the actress with a breakthrough, but also earned Lynch an Oscar for Best Director.

The two also fell in love on the film’s set and eventually became a couple in 1987 after divorcing their respective partners – Lynch from his second wife Mary Fisk and Rossellini from her second husband, Jonathan Wiedemann. In the film “Zelly and Me” the two even appeared together in front of the camera in the roles of lovers. In 1991, however, the two separated again after almost five years of dating. David Lynch married two more times after that. The director remained together with actress Emily Stofle, whom he married in 2009, until his death.

His family announced the 78-year-old’s death on Facebook on January 16th. “It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and artist David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy during this time. There is a big hole in the world now that he is no longer with us. But as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not the hole,'” was the message upon his passing. Grieving fans express their condolences in the comments.
