I Captain by Matteo Garrone, at the Venice Film Festival 2023. The trailer

Seydou and Moussa are little more than children when they set off from Dakar to Europe. They dream of a different future, they encourage each other (“the white people will ask for our autograph”), they don’t let themselves be discouraged by those who warn them about the dangers of the undertaking.

Matteo Garrone builds an adventure for children and adults welcoming the solicitations of the news and at the same time distancing itself from it, mixing fairy tale (Seydou’s very poetic dreams) and horror (the Libyan torture camps, the crossing of the desert).

Seydou Sarr in “I Captain”

It takes the viewer step by step on a journey with an uncertain outcome, tells us things that we should know, but that we ignore because they no longer affect us. Andrea Farri’s beautiful soundtrack is available digitally.
A film that awakens sleeping consciences.
