Three types of hybrid cars
First a brief explanation of the different types of hybrids available: mild, full and plug-in.
- Mild hybrid: has a small electric motor that supports the petrol engine, especially when accelerating. This results in lower emissions and fuel consumption.
- Full hybrid: with this car you can drive short distances completely electrically. If the battery is empty, the petrol engine switches on automatically and the battery is recharged while driving.
- Plug-in hybrid: has a larger battery and can drive longer distances electrically, but must be charged via a plug. Once the battery is empty, it often uses more fuel than other hybrids.

Whether you are looking for a compact model or a luxurious all-rounder, there is something for everyone, as shown in the list below from AutoTrack.
Recommended in the price range 5,000 to 10,000 euros
Honda Jazz (2011-2015)
“In this price range you have to choose between Honda Jazz and the Toyota Prius. The Prius is – on paper – the more economical of the two. The Jazz has a lower weight, so you pay less road tax for it. If you have children or regularly travel with more than two (adult) people, the Jazz is the better choice because of its spacious and practical interior.”
✓ Also good: Toyota Prius (2004-2009)
Recommended in the price range 10,000 to 15,000 euros
Hyundai IONIQ (2016-2020)
“Because the Toyota Prius has greater brand awareness, many used car buyers see it Hyundai IONIQ over the head. A shame, because the IONIQ is in any case just as good as the Prius in terms of economy – 1 in 20 average is easily achievable – and reliability. The IONIQ is also available as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), but this model almost does not fall within this price range due to the higher price.”
✓ Also good: Suzuki Swift Smart Hybrid (2017-2024)
Recommended in the price range 15,000 to 20,000 euros
Kia Niro (2016-2019)
“Spacious, reliable, comfortable and economical. Thanks to these properties, the Kia Niro a true everyone’s friend, and therefore a good choice. In this price range, the Niro is available as a full hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) – which on paper allows you to drive between 50 and 60 kilometers electrically. Keep in mind that the Niro PHEV offers less luggage space than the full hybrid version due to its larger battery.
✓ Also good: Mitsubishi Outlander (2015-2022)
Recommended in the price range 20,000 to 25,000 euros
Mazda CX-30 (2019-2024)
“The Mazda CX-30 is a very reliable, high-quality and comfortable crossover, a cross between – in this case – a hatchback and an SUV. Not the most spacious crossover, but the CX-30 more than makes up for that shortcoming with a comfortable driving experience and good fuel economy, aided by Mazda’s clever mild hybrid drivetrain.”
✓ Also good: Lynk & Co 01 (2021-2024)
