Musician Jesse Markin and his spouse were suspected of abusing their baby. In the end, a decision was made not to prosecute.
Hus’ branch director of children’s and young people’s diseases Jari Petäjä tells Ilta-Sanom that the matter should have been assessed in court.
– I am very worried about the decision not to press charges, Petäjä says.
– As a victim of a crime, a small child is in a particularly vulnerable position. The role of the legal system is to ensure that the weights of evidence and arguments are determined in court.
He does not take a position on Markin’s guilt, but considers the handling of the case in Finland exceptional and is concerned about the legal protection of young children.
He is specifically worried about the decision not to press charges.
Markin tells in his book Snakes and Butterflies (Jesse Markin – Elina Westinen, Like 2026) their views on the abuse and the course of events.
Markin and his spouse have denied the abuse. The book says that according to imaging findings, the child has BESS, which causes the head circumference of babies to grow rapidly. More cerebrospinal fluid than normal can accumulate in the space between the brain and the skull. It can also cause bleeding in the brain. It is a condition that goes away on its own.
Markin and his spouse sought expert opinions from foreign experts.
