Hurricane Ian death toll rises to over 100

The number of people killed by Hurricane Ian has risen to over 100. Most people were killed in the state of Florida, with at least 101 dead. That writes CNN. The hurricane claimed four lives in North Carolina and three in Cuba.

Hurricane Ian made landfall in southwest Florida on Wednesday. It was one of the worst hurricanes in United States history. Meter-high waves flooded the streets and destroyed homes and infrastructure.

Just after the hurricane, about 3.3 million households were without power. According to the last measurements there are now more than 466,000. Rescue workers meanwhile search for survivors among the rubble.

President Biden has declared a state of emergency in Florida to free up more money for reconstruction and relief efforts. According to insurers, Hurricane Ian will be one of the costliest in US history. It is estimated that the damage claims will amount to about $47 billion (47.9 billion euros).
