That sounds like a lot of work, and it is. But Rodenburg knows exactly what she is doing it for. “It’s a lot of fun,” she says. “Animals are very honest, the love you get from an animal is very sincere. It happened that way and there were more and more of them. We enjoy it immensely, despite the hard work.”

The animal shelter is one never ending story: there is always something to do. During the winter season there is a need to clean up, there is excavation work around the shelter, including the goat pasture, and a number of trees need to be cut down. Rodenburg himself has a daily job of cleaning.

Job weekend

“That is simply my biggest job. We have one and a half to two hours left per day to maintain one and a half hectares. That is not enough, so we try to tackle it properly once a year with a group of volunteers, so that we can do it next season can continue as usual.”

That annual handyman weekend takes place on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 February, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. “We of course hope for many people, because many hands make light work. And before you know it, things will look good for the animals.”
