HSV wants to extend Jatta with a quartet – 3 newcomers are planned

Reports on squad plans

Hamburger SV is apparently working on continuing to work with a set quartet, regardless of its league affiliation. In view of the tight and open season finale for promotion to the Bundesliga – but without deadline pressure – on the one hand, on the other hand with different chances of success. As the “Hamburger Abendblatt” reports, the North Germans, who are currently in relegation rank three, want to extend the contract with goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes (30), captain and central defender Sebastian Schonlau (28), clearer Jonas Meffert (28) and winger Bakery Jatta (24).

The HSV squad for the 2023/24 seasonTo overview
The working papers of the top performers run until June 2024. According to the report, the HSV sports bosses Jonas Boldt and Claus Costa have reached an agreement with the consultant agencies of the players concerned that concrete contract talks will only be held after the summer. For all candidates, however, the thrust is clear: we should continue together, even if there is no rush. When it is clear whether HSV has to go into a sixth year in the second division or whether it will play in the Bundesliga again in the future, the matter should be dynamic.

One catch: According to reports, not all of the four professionals want to go into the 2023/24 season with an expiring contract. The personnel Jatta is said to be the most complicated, because the darling of the public wants to join the ranks of the top earners, as it is said. The Gambian can currently be found quite far down in the club’s internal salary ranking. In principle, Jatta would want to sign a new long-term contract on the Elbe immediately – for the 1st and 2nd leagues. Goalkeeper Heuer Fernandes, who has been a top performer this year, obviously wants to follow up on his seven Bundesliga appearances with more. Either in Hamburg or possibly elsewhere if the rise does not succeed.

HSV: Good prospects for Schonlau and Meffert – squad plans for promotion

Schonlau and Meffert have the greatest chance of success because they identify with the club so strongly that they see their future at HSV even if they remain in the league. According to “Sport Bild”, the basic plan of the former Bundesliga “dinos” is in the first division comeback: A budget of 40 million euros is currently planned, which includes transfer expenses. At least three newcomers, internally referred to as “improvement players”, should come for defence, midfield and offensive.

In addition, there is room for investor Klaus-Michael Kühne and ideally other financiers to give the traditional club (again) financial support, especially in the event of promotion, so that the budget can increase to up to EUR 50 million – also through further unplanned income . That would be more than at 1. FC Köln or northern rivals Werder Bremen. Without external help, the opportunities to strengthen the squad would be severely limited. Bold willingness is there. Irrespective of this, the squad should not be subjected to any major upheaval, the impeccable team spirit and a functioning structure would be in the foreground. SC Freiburg and Union Berlin should be seen as positive examples for HSV.
