It was Queen Máxima, and not the princesses, who stole the show today during the biannual photo session in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. Where her daughters opted for ‘safe’ pantsuits, Máxima did something that many women are jealous of.
At first glance, the royal couple and the princesses are a perfect match, thinks fashion journalist Josine Droogendijk, who is the fashion of the royal family. follow closely. ,,You can clearly see the autumn palette in it. For the princesses the following applies: go for it, you are a princess and at the same time you are also an ordinary teenage girl who goes to school or university. What do you wear then? Something royal is expected of you, but you also want to reach your peers with it.” The answer to that was the pantsuit. Both for Amalia, Alexia and Ariane. Droogendijk calls this a safe choice, but logical.
Princess Amalia is more often spotted in a pantsuit, like last King’s Day. ,,She will feel most comfortable in that”, Droogendijk thinks. In any case, it has been well thought out. If you look closely, you will see that the green color of Amalia’s suit is reflected in Máxima’s cloak. ,,Normally the princesses are classically dressed. That is not the case now. Above all, it is safe. I can appreciate Amalia’s high heels.”
Droogendijk discovered that Ariane wears a (checkered) jacket from her mother. ,,In one way or another, there is always something of Máxima in the girls. That shows something about their admiration for their mother. Apparently she is also a style icon for the princesses.” Funny detail: it took a while before Droogendijk saw that Amalia’s suit is ‘just’ from Zara. ,,She made it difficult for me, because she had knocked in the flaps of her pocket. Then a jacket will look different.”
The Queen chose a familiar cloak that she often wore before. It is probably one of her favorites. ,,It is also sensible”, says Droogendijk. “The royal family is of course under attack. Complaints are made about the high costs of the royal family. If you opt for a well-known coat, that can be a conscious message.” Why is Máxima wearing the coat over her shoulders? ,,I’ve tried it myself a few times, but before you know it you’re looking crazy and that cloak is on the floor. I don’t know how she keeps it in place? It’s like there are magnets in her shoulders. I think it’s great that she dares, especially at such a photo opportunity. It is something that really suits Máxima. No one in the Netherlands wears his coat like that.”
In any case, Droogendijk thinks it is the queen who stands out again. ,,You are dealing with three trouser suits, blazers and straight lines, business looks, then this is beautiful. A rich fabric, a skirt made of vegan leather, that’s nice.” Amalia’s blouse was given extra thought. It is a copy of Zeus Edeo. “That is a Greek label that Máxima was spotted with in Greece on Monday.”
The fashion journalist is ‘very satisfied’ with the king. ,,This is a very good suit for him. That pile of fabric at his ankles is his trademark. I think he looks really neat.”
