Father Piet Vandermersch saw lightning fall on the house of his son, Gilles. “I thought it was on the trees, but it must have probably been on the light outside here. The electricity had gone out so we put the electricity back on and saw nothing special,” says Piet. “Suddenly there was smoke coming out of the roof tiles so the insulation was burning. And then it went through the roof, there were two meter high flames,” he continues. There are no other heat sources in the attic, so it is suspected that lightning caused the fire.
