The opening match of the World Cup was won by Mexico. In the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, the team of national coach Javier Aguirre managed to beat South Africa.

In the ninth minute of the opening match in Mexico City, Julián Quiñones scored the first goal of this tournament for the host country Mexico. In the rest of the match he remains dangerous for South Africa’s defense. Raúl Jiménez later added a second goal, which clearly made the player emotional.

The match turned out to be a rain of cards. Within the first twenty-five minutes, two yellow cards had been issued to both teams. Shortly after half-time, South African player Sphephelo Sithole was shown a red card. The South African team therefore had to play with one man less for the more than forty minutes that followed. Even with nine in the last six minutes of regular playing time: another red card followed, for Themba Zwane. In injury time, Mexico also had to make do with one player less, when César Montes received the third red card of the match.

Outside the stadium, demonstrators clashed with police. In images on the Mexican newspaper’s website La Jornada Masked demonstrators can be seen clashing with police officers. Videos of people throwing objects at police and arrests are also circulating on social media. Several groups of demonstrators came to the stadium on Thursday, such as mothers of missing persons and a teaching union advocating for higher wages.
