The municipality of Hoorn will open a temporary reception location for up to fifty asylum seekers in the old school building on Johannes Poststraat. The shelter is intended for a period of two years and will then be closed again. Previously, there was a plan to accommodate a hundred people, but there was too little support for this from the municipal council and local residents.

The shelter is intended for people who can live independently, such as singles, couples and families. There will be supervision day and night and security will also be present in the first months. The residents receive guidance and a daily program that is completed in collaboration with social organizations.

Local residents can contact a special telephone number that is always available with questions or complaints. The municipality organizes regular consultations with the neighborhood to discuss how things are going.

Plan for shelter location at hockey field scrapped

The municipality is also investigating two other locations where special target groups can live in the future. This concerns a site on the Middelweg/Venneweg and the former rugby field on the Blauwe Berg. The hockey field on Roskam was also previously considered, but that plan was scrapped after reactions from local residents and the municipal council.

By these special target groups, the municipality means status holders, Ukrainian refugees and people with a care need. The municipality also wants to see whether it is possible to allow young people or starters to live there. The first results of that research are expected in early 2026.

Finally, the municipality is considering whether it can purchase the building at Koopvaarder 1. Ukrainian refugees now live there. If the building is purchased, the shelter can continue to exist in the future.
