Hoogeveen will receive almost 15 million euros from the government to build houses faster

A boost for Hoogeveen. The municipality will receive 14.7 million euros from the government to accelerate housing construction. Hoogeveen wants to invest that money to connect the western part of the city center with the station area. There will also be more homes there.

‘Fantastic news’, alderman Roelof Bisschop calls it. “Many residents of Hoogeveen and the region are looking for a home. The pace of construction must therefore be increased considerably.” And with this money that can happen, he thinks. To achieve this, a lot of work still needs to be done. Existing roads and other infrastructure will therefore be overhauled.

At the same time, the municipality wants to be an attractive place for people who travel from Hoogeveen to Zwolle or the North for work, for example. That is why investments are being made in building homes near the station. “Good accessibility of Hoogeveen by rail is therefore a must and we are discussing this with The Hague,” says Bisschop.

Hoogeveen submitted an application for the financial contribution in September. So a wish comes true. “Together with the province of Drenthe, we have worked hard for the extra money. It is nice that our efforts have been rewarded.” It is not yet clear when the plans will be implemented.

The intention is to develop a sustainable living, working and living environment. The acceleration of housing construction in Hoogeveen is also in line with the Delta Plan of the North. This plan includes that the provinces of Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe and Flevoland will build a lot of houses to tackle the major housing shortage in the country.

There is, however, a countermeasure. For example, the provinces hope that the cabinet will invest heavily in the rail connections between the Randstad, Zwolle and the North. They also want more trains to run per hour, so that more people can use the track.

When and how the plans will be implemented is not yet clear.
