The municipality of Hoogeveen is investigating whether a new bridge over the Hoogeveense Vaart can remove freight traffic from the Julianastraat. Some residents there complain about vibrations and unsafe situations with trucks driving to the entrance of the Trivium Packaging company. That building is at the end of the same street.
Councilor Ronald Klok (VVD) announced during tonight’s council meeting that a solution is being worked on. This should take the form of a bridge that crosses the Hoogeveense Vaart, right behind the company.
In this way, freight traffic may no longer have to travel via Julianastraat in the future. Klok says that discussions are ongoing with Trivium and that the municipality wants to split the costs for the bridge. Trivium has not yet responded to that proposal.
The subject came up because Johannes Prakken of D66 made a request to the municipal council. The faction wants Alderman Klok to investigate whether there can be a ban on freight traffic in Julianastraat.
This seemed unwise to the VVD councilor, also because of the discussions that are now underway with Trivium. The rest of the city council also did not agree with D66’s idea. A number of council members called it ‘entrepreneur bullying’.
The majority of the council did not think it was wise either, because the municipality is already working on a solution. Prakken asked whether Klok could keep the municipal council informed of the developments. The councilor agreed.
