The owner of a building on the Herengracht had had enough of it: a homeless man who did his needs against his building every day. Last week the resident spoke to a group of agents on the street and complained about the homeless man.

‘Dichtmen stories’

Not much later they came across the roaming man in question sleeping on a bench. “We see many people with a roaming existence every day,” the police say, “all with their own story why or which makes them homeless. One story is more poignant than the other.”

But in this case the agents decided to wake up and check the man. Because he did not have a valid proof of identity in his pocket, he was arrested and taken to the desk.

Enormously surprised about the money

But once there he turned out to have something else in his pocket. Filled to the edge, he had several wallets with him. “The surprise of our colleagues was really great,” the police say. On the photo above you can see the many coins (1900 euros) and flaps. In total, the man had 13,400 euros with him.

The police suspect the homeless man of money laundering and therefore all the money has been seized. He appears not to have Dutch nationality and may be deported to where he comes from, the United States. “After the criminal proceedings, the man will be deported to his country of origin.” His application for a residence permit was previously rejected.
