The handball players from MT Melsungen started the group phase of the European League with a deserved and ultimately narrow home win. The North Hesse Bundesliga team beat Benfica Lisbon 28:26 (14:12) in their own hall on Tuesday evening. The Melsungers did not show their best handball in their fourth competitive game success in a row, but they did show such a concentrated performance that they largely had the Portuguese under control.

At the start of the second half, the hosts had gained a four-goal lead, which they maintained for a long time. It was only in the last five minutes that Benfica came within two goals, and things became unnecessarily exciting from Melsunger’s point of view. In the end it was enough to win at home. The MT’s most successful throwers were Ruben Marchan, Dainis Kristopans and Olle Forsell Schefvert with four goals each.

A cracker in Kiel on Saturday

The other MT opponents in the group phase are HF Karlskrona from Sweden and Ferencvarosi Club Budapest from Hungary. In the Bundesliga, the North Hessians continue with the cracker at THW Kiel on Saturday evening (8 p.m.).
