(askanews) – Unitaid and the American Foundation Gates have announced that From 2027, generic versions of Lenacapavir will be available, a preventive treatment against HIV, at a cost of about 34 euros (40 dollars) per year in over one hundred low and medium income countries. The original drug, marketed by Gilead Sciences with the name Yeztugo, costs around 23,825 euros per year in the United States, an inaccessible price for most of the vulnerable populations.

Carmen Perez Casas, strategic manager for Unitaid HIV: “Today we announce an agreement with one of the license holders for the production of the Lenacapavir, which is a revolutionary tool available for the prevention of HIV”.
“This tool actually offers a very high effectiveness, but with a very simple mode of use. We can administer two injections per year and obtain 100% prevention of the HIV”.

“Now, with this product, we can put an end to the HIV. We can really affect the curve of the epidemic and get to defeat the virus. It is at hand. But it is essential to invest immediately. Such a low price opens the way to this goal concretely”.
The production will begin in India thanks to voluntary licenses with local pharmaceutical companies, with the aim of extending the manufacture at the regional level in the future. According to experts, Lanacapavir represents the first long-lasting treatment for pre-exposition prophylaxis, a decisive step to stem the over 1.3 million new infections recorded in the world only in 2024.
