Hip Hop Recap: Featuring Megan Thee Stallion, Ski Aggu and Skepta

Whether in Great Britain, Germany or the USA: rappers celebrate their successes.

Who knew Ski Aggu and Megan Thee Stallion had similarities? Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration. However, this week everything is under an aggressive star in terms of singles. While Aggu launches “Zornig” in 2024, Thee Stallion gives a few swipes to start the new year. And Skepta is also back with “Gas Me Up”.

Megan Thee Stallion – “Hiss”

In November 2023, Megan Thee Stallion released her single “Cobra” and reflected on her milestones. After summing up traumatic experiences such as the death of her parents and grandmother, among other things, she concludes and announces a new chapter – and this one seems to begin with “Hiss” (in German “hiss”). Thee Stallion no longer “molts” but “hisses”. But what exactly does that mean? One thing in particular seems to be the overarching theme of the rapper’s releases: the snake. This uses the hissing to intimidate and announce a bite attack. That’s exactly what the lyrics of the song reflect, because the 28-year-old is settling the score. The Grammy winner introduces the track with a short announcement: “I just want to start this shit by saying, ‘Fuck y’all!'” Then a tight beat and an even tighter rap tempo follow.

One line also seems to refer to the trial against Tory Lanez, which she reported after he shot her in the feet. After winning the case, Thee Stallion states: “I’m the Teflon Don in the court room/They be throwin’ that dirt, don’t shit stick.” The track is brimming with self-confidence and Thee Stallion can afford that. Finally, she delivers clean skills again and raps through the three-minute song almost non-stop. A work that’s worth taking a closer look at the lyrics: Thee Stallion knows how to combine rap and entertainment. Some exaggerated lines sometimes make you smile: “I feel like Mariah Carey, got these n***** so obsessed/My pussy so famous, might get managed by Kris Jenner next.” Definitely a banger that hits back or rather bites.

Ski Aggu – “Angry (2024)”

After a very successful 2023 with some awards and hits, Ski Aggu is now using his single to predict his 2024: “Angry”. In addition to the ski goggles, the electronic sound is also Ski Aggus’ trademark. The instrumental by Dauner and Berky also adheres to this in “Zornig”. However, the flow is more aggressive in keeping with the title. And even though “Dry January” or “Veganuary” is almost coming to an end again, and some have already completed the registration form from the gym, Aggu’s resolutions come last: “In 2024 I will earn like İlkay Gündoğan.” The Berlin native has high ones Goals after his big successes. Even if everything is always done with a pinch of self-irony: “Most listeners in Germany per month, Ski Aggu is sixth (I’m not a rapper).” But that’s exactly what makes the “non-rapper” likeable and complements the picture of a personality , which doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Skepta – “Gas Me Up”

Speaking of: down-to-earthness! After five years, Skepta will release a new album with KNIFE AND FORK. And the first taste comes with “Gas Me Up,” in which the British native explains that success hasn’t changed him. Melodic rap meets a smooth beat here. Even if the pre-released single cover was more inappropriate than smooth and made us nervous about new music from the grime icon – in terms of sound, “Gas Me Up” is a good precursor for the album and makes us curious about the accompanying music video, which is out today appears at 6 p.m.
