Higher turnout in Drenthe at elections

The turnout for the provincial elections in Drenthe is higher than four years ago. Of those entitled to vote, 65.2 percent actually cast a vote. In the 2019 elections, it was 58.8 percent.

Drenthe is one of the provinces with the highest turnout. Not all votes of all municipalities are known yet, so the national turnout is not yet known. So far only the turnout in Friesland is higher. With two more municipalities to count, the turnout there is 66.7 percent. In the province of Overijssel, the turnout is equal to that of Drenthe, but there too the results of two municipalities have yet to be received.

For Drenthe it is the highest turnout since 1987, when 76.5 percent of those entitled to vote voted. In 1991, the turnout percentage was last above 60 percent, at 62 percent. Since then, the turnout has fluctuated between 50 and 60 percent every Provincial Council election.

In De Wolden, the turnout is the highest in Drenthe. There, 76.9 percent of the people exercised their right to vote. The BBB convincingly became the largest in De Wolden with 45.4 percent of the vote. That is BBB’s biggest victory in Drenthe. Across the province, BBB received 33.5 percent of the vote. That is good for 17 seats.

In Emmen, the fewest people voted in percentage terms. That is 58.3 percent. In every municipality more people turned out to vote.
