The German Sports Aid Foundation is distributing 740,000 euros to German medal winners at the Winter Olympics.
Despite the lower number of medals, the athletes from Team D around shooting star Emma Aicher will receive more bonuses than for the 2022 Games in Beijing (704,000). For the first time, the donations are tax-free.
The foundation took the announcement as an opportunity to advocate for a rethink. The overall performance shows: “We will have to provide even more targeted and individual support in the future,” said board member Karin Orgeldinger, referring to the German medals, 73 percent of which resulted from successes in the ice track.
The 14 gold medal winners, such as ski jumper Philipp Raimund, will each receive 30,000 euros. The ten silver medalists will receive 20,000 euros, the twelve bronze medalists will each receive 10,000 euros.
Winners of multiple medals cannot necessarily expect multiple payouts. “If an athlete wins multiple medals, the greatest success will be honored,” the statement says. For the lugers Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt, for example, this means that only gold in the team relay is rewarded, while bronze in the doubles event does not result in a bonus.
