After winning the cup against Schalke, Darmstadt wanted to improve in the league. But with Arminia Bielefeld the “Lilien” faced a tough opponent.
Darmstadt 98 missed out on a home win in the top game of the 2nd Bundesliga. Despite leading twice, the South Hesse team only managed a 2-2 draw against Arminia Bielefeld and missed out on jumping to fourth place. The guests from East Westphalia, on the other hand, ended the match day in ninth place.
The goals on Saturday evening were scored by Fraser Hornby (4th minute) and Isac Lidberg (33rd) for Darmstadt and Noah-Joel Sarenren Bazee (28th) and Maximilian Großer (73rd) for Bielefeld. Arminia avoided their fifth defeat in the last six league games thanks to an increase in performance after the break.
Darmstadt immediately set the pace in their home stadium at Böllenfalltor. Hornby rewarded coach Florian Kohfeldt’s team early on when they followed up. Even after taking the lead, the “Lilien” created chances, the best of which was Matej Maglica hitting the crossbar (19th). The answer to Bielefeld’s surprising equalizer didn’t take long to arrive: Lidberg scored after a long ball from goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen.
Bielefeld came out of the locker room more awake and worked their way into the game better and better. Darmstadt had to cope with the replacement of attacker Hornby due to injury (63′) and from then on acted much more passively. The punishment followed: Großer’s shot was deflected decisively by Maglica.
