Victor Vlam agrees with the massive criticism of Rutger Castricum, his direct colleague in Hélène Hendriks’ Oranje talk shows. “I think he really needs to be more spicy, yes,” the TV critic sneers.
Now that Jack van Gelder has abruptly disappeared from the TV due to his shouting matches behind the scenes, the battle for his succession has begun. From now on, who can play the Johan Derksen role in Hélène Hendriks’ talk shows? Of the viewers of her shows, only 16 percent want Rutger Castricum, while 68 percent go for Victor Vlam.
New Rutger
Why Rutger is so unpopular? Victor gets it. “I think he needs to be more spicy. I think he really needs to be more spicy, yes,” he says in the podcast Victor Indicates TV. “I understand that he is no longer the Rutger Castricum of GeenStijl and I think it is also logical, once you have done that for a number of years, to come up with another trick for yourself.”
He continues: “This was fifteen years ago. If he were literally still speaking to politicians in The Hague in the same way, we would probably all find it a bit sad, so I understand that you want to take on a different role. It is also logical to develop yourself to keep it interesting for yourself.”
Just a bit too boring
Now, however, Rutger has gone to the other side, Victor thinks. “I think he is now in the situation where he is just a bit too boring. I think he needs a little more spice. That would be good for the Oranje talk show. I think that is really necessary.”
He continues: “Of course he has to ask the question whether that suits him. I think it should work, but I just think it doesn’t have enough spice. It’s just not interesting enough.”
Wrong glasses
Finally, Victor finds Rutger’s new glasses horrible. “It’s the wrong glasses. It’s not the right frame. We can dance around it for a long time, but we all know it’s true: it just doesn’t look terribly good on him.”
“Every now and then you have to try something, it can happen, but it is better to abandon it now and get a modest frame, because these glasses are really distracting.”
