Hertha got off to a perfect start to the year and secured the first three points of the second half of the season. Nuremberg shocked the KSC late. Magdeburg played a crazy game.

Successful start to the second half of the season for Hertha BSC: The capital club celebrated a 2-1 away win (1-0) at SC Paderborn in the 2nd Bundesliga. Derry Scherhant put the Berliners in front with a dream goal (16th minute). Mickaël Cuisance extended the lead in the second half. The Frenchman scored with a penalty kick (69′). Sven Michel’s goal came too late (90+4). Hertha is twelfth after the success, Paderborn is eighth after the defeat.

At the same time, 1. FC Nürnberg defeated Karlsruher SC 2:1 (1:1). Stefanos Tzimas first scored for coach Miroslav Klose’s team (36th). KSC striker Fabian Schleusener managed to equalize the 1-0 for the home team just four minutes later (40th). In stoppage time, Florian Flick shocked the Baden team with a powerful long-range goal (90th + 1). Nuremberg is now eleventh, KSC missed the jump to first place and is in sixth place.

Meanwhile, SV Elversberg had to cope with a severe home defeat. The Saarland team deservedly led 2-0 at half-time against 1. FC Magdeburg. In the end it was 2:5 from Elversberger’s point of view. The decisive factor was a red card shortly before the break for SVE defender Frederik Schmahl after an emergency stop (44th).

Luca Schnellbacher (3rd) and Lukas Petkov (36th) had previously taken the lead for Elversberg. In the end, thanks to the hat-trick from Martijn Kaars (46th/73rd/90th+1) as well as the goals from Xavier Amaechi (77th) and Mohammed El Hankouri (82nd/penalty kick), Magdeburg was able to gain three points and move up to place in the table two cheer. Elversberg is seventh.

The game began with a moment of shock for Hertha, but the supposed lead for Paderborn did not count due to an offside position (4th). A little later, Scherhant broke through on the left side and made it 0-1 with a precise shot.

The SCP then showed itself to be insufficiently creative offensively and was unable to create any significant chances. Numerous ball losses on both sides led to a disjointed game in the second half. A penalty after a foul on Scherhant finally broke the Paderborn team’s neck: Cuisance safely converted to make it 0-2.

Paderborn came back shortly before the end and then called for another penalty a few seconds later. Referee Florian Heft decided against a penalty – and whistled the game off shortly afterwards.

After the first half, Nuremberg had to regret not having made more use of their superiority. Coach Miroslav Klose’s team had everything under control for long stretches, didn’t allow much – and still only went into the break with a draw because Schleusener headed Karlsruhe’s first chance after a long cross from 17-year-old Pinto Pedrosa.

The “club” tried to make up for its omissions after the break. The hosts continued to apply pressure and pushed for another lead. Karlsruhe’s goalkeeper Max Weiß made a strong save against Julian Justvan’s shot from 20 meters (59′), and teammate Tzimas unintentionally directed Jens Castrop’s dangerous shot just over the crossbar (66′). The KSC then held back so as not to run into a counterattack – Flick finally scored from 20 meters.

The hosts started strongly in the Arena an der Kaiserlinde, with Schnellbacher taking the lead from the first chance. Magdeburg appeared unimpressed, but failed several times due to the strong parrying of Elversberg goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof. Elversberg then stepped up, but weakened shortly before the break.

With the majority, Magdeburg turned up the heat. After the quick goal, almost only the guests played. They used their superiority to score four more goals.
