Hertha BSC is targeting the promotion ranks. The Berliners achieve their next victory. VfL Bochum, on the other hand, has to accept a setback.
The team of the moment in the 2nd Bundesliga is Hertha BSC. The capital club won its fifth competitive game in a row on Friday evening and has climbed to fourth place in the table for the time being. In front of their home crowd, Berlin defeated Eintracht Braunschweig 1-0 (0-0). It was also the fifth game in a row without conceding a goal for Stefan Leitl’s team.
In the parallel game, VfL Bochum left the field as a loser for the first time under Uwe Rösler. After ten points from the first four league games under the new coach, there was a 1:2 defeat (0:2) at home against newly promoted Dynamo Dresden.
Marten Winkler (56th) scored Berlin’s goal in a somewhat flattering victory. Braunschweig slipped into a direct relegation zone after its eighth defeat in the last nine games.
The guests got off to a better start in front of 42,895 spectators in the Olympic Stadium. Central defender Patrick Nkoa narrowly missed the lead after a standard situation with a header from close range (8th). The Berliners had a difficult time offensively. Braunschweig closed the center and the hosts’ wing play was lame. Lower Saxony remained the more dangerous team in the first half. After Diego Demme lost the ball, Christian Conteh also missed his chance (45th + 1).
Even after the change, the hosts’ game initially lacked speed and creativity. Braunschweig made the space tight and still fell behind. Captain Fabian Reese crossed and Winkler headed in. Linus Gechter was then denied by visiting goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann (58′).
Alexander Rossipal (26th) and Vincent Vermeij (45th + 1) scored the goals for the Saxons, who celebrated their second away win of the season. Cajetan Lenz (59th) shortened for VfL. 18-year-old Francis Onyeka failed with a penalty kick (76th).
Bochum started dominantly, even if the fans were silent for the first twelve minutes in protest against stricter security measures in the stadiums. But there were no top-class opportunities. Dresden survived this phase unscathed and took the first good opportunity to take the lead: Rossipal’s first shot was blocked by defender Felix Passlack, but the follow-up shot was spot on. It was Bochum’s first goal conceded after 299 competitive minutes.
The guests took control of the game and increased the lead to 2-0 before the break. After a cross from Rossipal, which Felix Passlack did not prevent, Vermeij scored. With captain Philipp Hofmann coming on as a substitute, Bochum shifted up several gears after the break, and Lenz consequently managed to catch up. Dynamo keeper Lennart Grill prevented Philipp Strompf from equalizing with a brilliant save (71′). He then fouled Hofmann in the penalty area, but Onyeka shot past the goal all too casually.
