Lukas Michelbrink will also play for second division promoted Energie Cottbus next season. The 21-year-old defensive midfielder has extended his contract with Hertha BSC and will be loaned out again to Brandenburg. His new working paper in the capital is now valid until 2029.
“This loan has worked out well so far: for Cottbus, for Lukas and for Hertha BSC. He has fought for a regular place there, was part of the team that achieved promotion to the 2nd league and has developed very well. We are pleased that he can now continue to gain match practice at a high level in the 2nd Bundesliga next year and will continue to closely monitor his development,” said sports director Benjamin Weber, commenting on Michelbrink’s contract extension. The Berlin native moved to Hertha in 2017 and has been through all the junior teams since then; he has not yet appeared on the pitch for the professionals.
Last season, Michelbrink was a regular during his loan to Cottbus and returned with the club to the 2nd Bundesliga. In 30 games he made six assists and his market value climbed from 250,000 to 400,000 euros. The next plus awaits him on Friday at the market value update for the 3rd league.
Cottbus coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz said about Michelbrink: “Lukas is a fantastic footballer with outstanding abilities and an extremely good football education, which he was able to enjoy in Berlin. He was a very important factor in our game and took a big step in his development here. Now we want him to take the next step with us in the second division. We are very happy that this ‘perfect match’, as they say these days, can continue with us for another year.”
