The farmhouse with thatched roof on Provincialeweg Noord 19-C in Almkerk can be seen from a great distance. During the renovation in 2005, the monumental home and the corresponding black barn were melted together. Four modern houses and a gallery have been built under the thatched roof. One of those characteristic houses is now for sale for 595,000 euros via Paans Makelaardij in Werkendam.

“We live here from the first hour,” says Marc van den Nieuwenhuijzen, owner of the house for sale in Almkerk. “The plan was only on paper at the time. So you had to have some imagination to see the end result. It was soon clear that we could combine the authentic parts of the farm, such as the thatched roof and the wooden trunks, with modern interiors. That certainly triggered us to live in this farm.”

First one step back in time. De Vlashoeve farm was built in 1850 on the outskirts of Almkerk. That happened through the Zeeuw Nicolaas de Rooij. Arable farmer, cattle farmer and Vlasteler by profession. The farm was built at the time to Zeeuw’s example: high on the dike with a view over the polder.

During the renovation of the farm in 2005, the barn was overhauled. Four houses were built in the thirty -meter -long peasant barn with the front door on a gallery. In the houses and in the barn, plenty of old elements have been incorporated attractively during the renovation, such as the large trusses. “The back of the house is lower. This is now our living room with vide.”

Yet there is a move with the Van den Nieuwenhuijzen family. “Our children were ten years old when we came to live here. In the meantime they are people in their thirties with their own family and they live somewhere else. The house has become too big for us. We have chosen to live closer to family and friends. In a life -course -proof home.”

That house has since been found in Nieuwkuijk. A few residential areas will be built on the site of the former Land van Ooit in the coming months. “Our home will be delivered in 2026.”

Van den Nieuwenhuijzen describes his current home as a ‘house with character’. “Here, for example, large wooden trusses run through the house. Upon returning home you can look up about ten to twelve meters from the living room. I think that is a beautiful home again and again. On the outside you cannot see how spacious our house is. It is very pleasant to live here.”

Marc emphasizes the importance of good neighbors. “We will certainly miss the joint inheritance. This spring we have sanded the wooden facade together with our neighbors. Really nice to do that together. And it is good for the mutual band.”
