Henkjan Smits does not understand at all that the TV show Maestro is such a success, because the program is broadcast on a Sunday evening. And then, according to the former MAX star, you really don’t watch TV…

It is truly incomprehensible to former MAX presenter Henkjan Smits that Maestro is such a great success. He also missed out on the last series, in which Jamai Loman was crowned winner. The reason? The broadcast evening. He finds it quite sad to sit in front of a television screen on a Sunday evening.

Waste of time

Henkjan was at the cradle of Jamai’s career, but did not see him in Maestro. “No. How stupid, isn’t it? Sunday evening is not the evening for me when I think: I’m going to watch some TV. I think that’s such a waste of my time. Sorry, of course I’m not allowed to say that,” he says in the Party.

He continues: “My sister texted me: you have to watch, Jamai is fan-tas-tic! That’s why I watched the final and saw live that Jamai won. Conductors say that Maestro is something different from conducting, but what Jamai does is really conducting. I haven’t seen the program further, but I will watch parts of it.”

Signature

It’s very clever of Jamai, Henkjan thinks. “When I saw Jamai conduct Beethoven’s Fifth, I thought: there is really someone there. What I also read is that Jamai made the orchestra sound different. Then you really put your signature and I think that’s cool.”

He concludes: “When he won, I was also reminded of 23 years ago, when he was in the final of Idols together with Jim Bakkum. I immediately sent Jamai an app: wow, 23 years later you are standing your ground again and you win again with a preponderance of votes. He has something. Jamai has the x-factor.”
