A surprise was revealed from the Kotimaista brand’s large free-range eggs.

Hallikainen broke another egg, and again a double yolk fell into the bowl. It was time for the third egg. Double yolk again. In the end there were five double yolks in the bowl.

– I couldn’t be bothered to break the eggs when the situation was so special. I went to show the eggs to our 13-year-old twins before continuing to make the macaroni box. Another wondered that ‘oh, a bit like us’.

Hallikainen was left to wonder what caused the phenomenon. How did so many “twins” end up in the same cell? Pippuri.fi asked the S group about it and sent a picture of the chicken ID stamped on the shell of the eggs, which can be used to trace the origin of the eggs.

– In this case, the eggs come from an actual Finnish farm, and they are packed in egg cells at Kieku Oy in Loimaa, says the product quality manager Helena Jalomäki SOK Marketkauppa’s chain management.

According to Jalomäki, double yolks can occur randomly in the eggs of all chickens. However, they are most typical at the beginning and end of the chickens’ egg-laying period, when the young hens are still in the growth phase and just practicing laying eggs, and the older hens stop laying eggs accordingly.

– In young chickens, double yolks are related to the fact that the ovaries are not yet functioning normally, and in older chickens to the fact that the function of the ovaries is beginning to wane.

Since in laying hens, the hens typically live in a flock that includes hens of the same age, the entire flock also starts laying eggs at approximately the same times.

– It is possible that many of the chickens in the development phase sensitive to double yolks have laid eggs containing double yolks, and for this reason several of them hit the cells at the same time.

Jalomäki reminds that there is no quality defect in eggs containing a double yolk. They can be used in cooking in the normal way.
